Overview of the Growing Needs of This Area

Many people are reluctant to be tested because of the implications and stigma associated with being HIV+. Thus the sick and the healthy generally decline to be tested. If the fear of this disease can be overcome we should be testing in the tens of thousands each year.

Many of the deaths in the hospital are due to AIDS but do not appear in the category “known to have AIDS” because the patient declined to be tested. Thus a much higher percentage of our patients are dying of AIDS than are reflected in the numbers on the graph. Also, many people are dying of AIDS at home and those numbers are not reflected here.
